Leon Trotsky
The social revolution is entirely based upon the growth of proletarian consciousness and on the faith of the proletariat in its own strength and in the party which is leading it.
James P Cannon
The workers of America have power enough to topple the structure of capitalism at home and to lift the whole world with them when they rise.
It seems rather fitting that after months of hard preparation to release a new edition of the L5I’s pamphlet, The Road to Red October, we find ourselves in the midst of a growing, near global movement against austerity, poverty, joblessness, and undemocratic governance under capitalism. The Occupy Wall St. action has sounded the tocsin: rise up! And now from coast to coast and threatening to extend farther, solidarity occupations are in place.
It comes us no surprise to us that after near 3-years worth of stagnant economic conditions, attacks on workers’ democratic rights to organize, and a Congress enthralled with and subservient to the very individuals, banks, and corporations responsible for such conditions that thousands across the country have taken to the streets citing their complete inability to stand it one second longer.
And while the movement may be small relatively to the population of the USA, diffuse, and undefined at the moment, the actions bring to the forefront that seemingly ubiquitous question: how can we win? We believe the answer to that question can be found in history or, more precisely, in the events recalled in this pamphlet.
It is, as we’ve chosen to put it, “essential reading for all those who want to make another world possible.”
